The National Lottery Heritage Fund Grant

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded the Blue Hope Alliance a grant for our marine restoration project: “Scotland's Hidden Reefs: Saving Maerl, Herring and Underwater Ecosystems through Citizen Science, Advocacy and Storytelling.”

The project is made possible thanks to National Lottery players, as a result we can celebrate our marine heritage in stories, films and events, widely report on our 10 years of citizen science maerl surveying to advocate for ecosystem restoration, hire a community engagement project officer for 3 years, and launch the first community-owned open source, underwater citizen science survey archive in the UK. We can also upscale our evidence gathering and community engagement. This is all to protect, restore and build regional caretaking of our coastal heritage. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest funder for the UK’s heritage. Using money raised by National Lottery players it supports projects that connect people and communities to heritage. The Fund’s vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. From historic buildings, our industrial legacy and the natural environment, to collections, traditions, stories and more. Heritage can be anything from the past that people value and want to pass on to future generations. The fund believes in the power of heritage to ignite the imagination, offer joy and inspiration, and to build pride in place and connection to the past. The Blue Hope alliance is very grateful for the opportunity to achieve our vision to achieve our dreams of thriving seas and communities. Most of the grant has been provided by the Heritage Fund but the shortfall has been match funded by members of the North & West Fishery Board. We are looking for sponsors for year 2 & 3.
